another quest

So we've been making pineapple upside-down cake lately. The first one was this recipe out of Bon Appetit that involved fresh pineapple. Fresh is always better, right? Not in this case - it tasted all, like, healthy and stuff, which was not what we had in mind at all.

The second attempt involved proper canned pineapple and maraschino cherries and the recipe off the box of the cake mix. This turned out much closer to our visions of ooey-gooeyness. Pretty darn good, actually. But it still doesn't quite cross the line of fabulousity that some cakes do. It goes right up to the border, though.

So here's the question: Do any of you folks have a recipe for old-fashioned totally decadent pineapple upside-down cake? One that makes you sit up and go 'Ooh' after you take the first bite? One that calls you from the kitchen after you've gone to bed? You know, the one your grandma used to make, and that you can still taste now, all these years later.

It sounds like you've tried both extremes and now need to find the happy medium.

With the first recipe, you went all fresh and foody and missed out on the ooey-goo. With the second, you got the ooey-goo, but if you used a cake mix there's no way you could cross the threshold into fabulosity.
If you want a first-class cake, you _must_ make it from scratch and you must use butter.

Do you have the Joy of Cooking? it probably has the recipe you want.
