ka-chunk

Still cleaning in preparation for moving, still finding relics everywhere. I miss my old library card, which made that wonderful "ka-chunk" noise when the librarians checked me out. Many ka-chunks for many books. Now I just use the little barcode thingy that goes on my keyring, and everything is little beeps instead of ka-chunk. Somehow those little beeps just aren't as satisfying as the rotund, profound sound which meant By God, those books were checked.

I miss those cards, too. I'd forgotten about them. Especially liked "rotund" and "profound". VERY apt. I'm nearly inspired to post about my long summers at the library as a child.

I remember I thought I was hot shit when I got my own library card, when I was about 8 - my family used to go together to the library once a week. It was my first piece of I.D., a sign of being more than just a little kid but someone who was trusted to be responsible for something valuable.
