the current state of meatloaf

We've had a powerful hankering for meatloaf lately, but we're not so sure about eating ground cow these days. However, life without meatloaf (and meatloaf sandwiches) really isn't worth living. So a couple of nights ago, I made one from a pound of ground lamb, a pound of ground pork, onion, a lot (a very lot) of garlic, red pepper, white pepper, black pepper, two eggs, ketchup, and rolled oats. Turned out beautifully, and I just had a meatloaf sandwich with lots of Zatarain's Creole Mustard for lunch. If you're a meat person and looking for a substitute for ground beef, I highly recommend ground lamb.

Yes, why don't we eat the cute little lamb? The baby lamb? The one that lost its mother ... that Little Bo Peep is looking for.

Maybe I just live life on the edge, I don't know: I'm just not that worried about Mad Cow to give up my normal meatloaf. I look at it this way -- consider how many cows in the UK had Mad Cow Disease. I think it was a shitload [yes, that's the official terminology *grin*], and maybe only half a dozen people came down with any symptoms. Now watch, I'll come down with Mad Cow symptoms tomorrow! Heh!

I like meatloaf, and I like lamb, so it's a match made in heaven. Which is probably the closest I'm going to get!

I think the chances of actually getting Mad Cow are slim-to-none, but I also know my luck. ;) I'm still eating cow that comes in slabs, like steaks and roasts, but staying away from the ground stuff because I'm not sure I trust the meat industry to keep all the brain and spinal cord tissue out of it. Paranoid, I know.

We don't eat an abundance of red meat, but still, I've not been deterred by the latest "mania" of mad cow. In fact, I've been hitting those steak sales. The meat loaf sounds awesome. I'm still trying to find the time to make a meatball soup.

We've been eating a lot of ground turkey lately...

I still suck the marrow out of beef bones at each meal, but now I kill the germs with vodka to be safe.

And for some reason the Red Cross won't let me give blood anymore!
