Hmm: definitely some links I'll have to check out. For the beginner's treatment (like, beyond Mill), I started out with Bertrand Russell's brief summary in History of Western Philosophy and the Cambridge Dictionary of Philosophy entry, 'cause I really wasn't the best student as an undergrad. What was really terrific, though, were the brief note on Mill offered in Heilbroner's The Worldly Philosophers and the smart summary Varoufakis offers of the critiques of utilitarianism in Foundations of Economics. I tried to talk out some of these ideas in this post (where -- hey! -- I even mentioned you, in some sort of weird synchronicity), but I think I got wrong more than I got right.

Thanks, Mike! I'll have to look into the Varoufakis in particular. BTW, I'm finally getting around to the Gudeman piece on Postmodern Gifts that you recommended forever ago. It's paired with several other articles on gift theory in "Postmodernism, Economics and Knowledge," by Cullenberg, Amariglio and Ruccio.
