This is from a postcard we picked up at the National Music Museum in Vermillion, SD. The description of the birdie says:

Mayuri, northern India, 19th century. This peacock is a bowed, stringed instrument with movable frets, four principle strings, and fifteen sympathetic strings.
The museum’s collection is remarkable for its size; it’s worth a visit if you’re out that way.
