discardia
By executive decision, we’re celebrating Discardia all this month.
Discardia is celebrated by getting rid of stuff and ideas you no longer need. It's about letting go, abdicating from obligation and guilt... Discardia is the time to get rid of things that no longer add value to your life, shed bad habits, let go of emotional baggage and generally lighten your load. You wouldn’t think this would be necessary, since we both threw away significant portions of our belongings two years ago when we moved in together and again a year ago during the move to Minnesota. But the little pockets of stuff have already been creeping in, and they’re starting to weigh on me.
I’m more interested in the psychological benefits than anything else. I sold off a lot of books this summer, and that was a good enough start that I want more. Gaining some room is good, but more important is to deal with all the emotional stuff that comes with the clutter-stuff. And it’s odd, the emotion that somehow is attached to stuff that you’re not at all consciously emotional about — like socks. I spent 15 minutes weeding the sock drawers the other morning, and you know what? Now they close. Who knew? And who knew that such a little thing would make me feel so much calmer about the day? So my goal is to discard one thing each day this month. Nothing big needs to go, but I’ll be interested to see how much of the little stuff I can eradicate in 31 days.
