- I’m originally from Little Rock, AR.
- Yes, I consider this to mean that I’m Southern. Arkansas is half Delta, half Ozark foothills. There are still several plantations scattered around the central part of the state.
- But since I moved to Minnesota I discovered that I’m a north-toward-home Southerner. This development was entirely unanticipated. Perhaps it will reverse itself one day.
- Mostly only child, but not quite. Some cousins lived with us for a number of years starting when I was 10.
- Mostly Irish, some English, wee bit of Cherokee.
- If someone had told me five years ago that intellectual property would be my research area, I’d have died laughing. But it is, and I enjoy it more than I thought possible.
- I’ve been a redhead for the past fourteen years, courtesy of Miss Clairol.
- I dropped out of high school at 16 to go to college early. I lasted two years, and then dropped out of college.
- Now I’m a little less than halfway through a Ph.D.
- I grow carnivorous plants. Saracennia are my favorites, but since I don’t have enough room for them right now I have more sundews.
- I don’t grow African violets or bonsai, which I always kill.
- I only speak one language, in spite of four years of Spanish. This is a source of some sorrow.
- I have been abroad once, to Scotland.
- I have looked for the Loch Ness Monster, Big Foot, and UFOs.
- I can’t sleep with the closet door open. There might be monsters.
- I dream vivid, involved, color dreams every night.
- I like to think there are many things out there that are undreamt of in our philosophy.
- I was an English major once. I have a BA in literature that I’ll probably never use.
- I don’t think it’s a loss, though. That training brings a certain lyricism into the Tech Comm work I do.
- My favorite colors are green and purple.
- I grew up with both cats and dogs, but I’m a dog person. I’ve been dogless for the past two years, which makes me very sad.
- I’m childfree, but I don’t begrudge anyone else the pleasure.
- I’ve never had a cavity, but I did have four years of orthodontia.
- My eyes have two very different prescriptions.
- I got contacts at 13 and bifocals in my very early 20s. But mostly, you’ll see me with contacts and reading glasses.
- I also have terrible night vision.
- I’m also quite deaf due to spinal meningitis at 2.
- I don’t sign.
- I’ve always had very few friends my own age. Since I was quite little, almost all of them have been around 20 years older.
- I’m married to a man eighteen years and eleven days older than me.
- He claims that I chased him until he let me catch him. He might be right. I have never done well with people who asked me out, preferring to handle things the other way around.
- I tend to keep very small groups of close friends and hold everyone else at some length. I’m not sure this is really the best way to handle things, but I’ve not been able to do it any other way.
- As a correllative, I prefer to socialize with one other person or a very small group. Part of this is due to deafness, I think: when more than three other people are talking, I can’t keep up.
- I used to cook quite a bit. Sometimes I still do.
- I like things with intense tastes: ginger, cranberries, curries, ale, dark chocolate, pickled vegetables.
- I find most Minnesota food very bland. The trick around here is to not eat the white-people food.
- Red candies are best. So are sour ones. In spite of a fondness for mint tea and chocolate, I don’t like Junior Mints or Peppermint Patties. I think they taste like toothpaste wrapped in cheap chocolate.
- I am a latent kitchen appliantologist. However, I think an appliance should have multiple applications, and that most tasks can be taken care of with a spoon, a whisk, and a good set of knives. My mezzaluna is an exception to this rule.
- I work best in the afternoons.
- I also work best when I get up at 5:30 and get all of my procrastinating and administrative stuff out of the way early.
- I used to be a night owl, but that has changed in the past seven years or so.
- If I wasn’t an academic, I’d want to own a bookstore or a restaurant. Or I might just go back to doing business development.
- I don’t really understand the concept of team sports, and don’t follow any. I did play basketball for a year in junior high, and played enough time to letter. In all of that time on the court, I scored one rebound. I still don’t really understand basketball.
- One thing I do love is art. Almost all of the art on our walls is original, made by Mister Husband or friends.
- I’m always ready to spend an afternoon in a museum or gallery. If I were to ever make money, this is where it would go.
I think that’s enough for now. Feel free to add more in the comments.
