media binge

Whenever we’re on break, we watch movies nearly every night. Here’s what we managed to get through this time. (Favorites are marked with asterisks.)

  1. Being There* (Peter Sellers as an idiot savant god. Brilliant.)
  2. Aeon Flux (Not as bad as the critics said.)
  3. Citizen Kane* (Because, well, it’s Citizen Kane)
  4. Lou Reed: Transformer (Window on Factory and Max's Kansas City culture)
  5. The Police: Synchronicity Live (Just like the title says.)
  6. American Beauty* (The only time I’ve seen it all the way through with no interruptions)
  7. Something the Lord Made (Better than the usual made-for-cable fare, plus Alan Rickman!)
  8. History of the World Part I* (Swimming nuns on gigantic menorahs)
  9. Closer (Brutal. Just brutal.)
  10. The Notebook (Sweet.)
  11. Wild In the Streets (60's film by the same guys who made all the Beach Party movies, only about youth who overthrow the government and send everyone over 18 to isolation camps)
  12. Beautiful Girls (Very Minnesota)
  13. Bodies, Rest and Motion (The first time I saw this right after it came out, I thought the characters were Quite Grown Up. Now I’m so glad to be past the early 20s.)
  14. I Heart Huckabee’s (Overwrought. Pseudo-intellectual. But hey, Lilly Tomlin!)
  15. The Cheyenne Social Club* (Henry Fonda and Jimmy Stewart in a whorehouse with Mama Partridge.)
  16. Million Dollar Baby (Fixed fight. Already wrote about that.)
  17. The Rainmaker (with Burt Lancaster and Katherine Hepburn. A woman ain’t nothin’ until she’s loved by a man, especially if she’s too smart or thinks critically. Loved the actors, hated the script.)
  18. Son In Law (Perhaps the only watchable Pauly Shore movie. Guilty pleasure.)
  19. The Shining (Already written about. Mixed feelings, but it still sticks in my head.)
  20. Rumble Fish* (Must watch 798 more times. Remarkable.)
  21. Cold Blooded (Jason Priestly as an apprentice hitman. Better than you’d think.)
  22. The Parent Trap (The original. Was afraid it wouldn’t hold up, but it’s actually even better to watch as an adult, I think.)

Comments

Love Being There. Enjoyed both versions of The Parent Trap. Thanks for watching The Shining on my behalf, now I have even less reason to watch it ;-).
