Read More Fiction
I haven’t read much fiction at all since I finished the Lit B.A. and started on my graduate work. And I know that anybody in their right mind would say that someone who’s starting exams and a diss shouldn’t be thinking about fiction at all.
Advice like that has never worked for me, though. My friend Cris got me to admit that to myself, and showed me that you can do smart work while taking time for beautiful things. And right now, I think I should be taking moderate doses of A.S. Byatt and Annie Proulx.

Ooooh...definitely read some Jasper Fforde. You'll like it. Speculate fiction for the literary geek, I like to call it.

I'm glad you've got friends like Cris, because I definitely agree. And, like you, the usual advice often doesn't work for me.
