delayed

If I were on track with the absurd schedule I set for myself this summer, I’d be taking exams this week and next.

As it turns out, I am not.

I am telling myself that this is not failure, that most people do not take their exams ten weeks after finishing coursework, especially not while working non-academic summer jobs. There were several of us who had this plan for the summer, and only one of us is actually going up as planned. I believe he's on for next week.

We're all convening for beer and motivation tonight. And it looks like now I’m hoping to sit mine in early fall.

I wouldn't think twice about it. Take the time you need to get prepared and then take the exams. I think I started reading for my exams in April and then took them in August or Sept., and that was reading non-stop for about 16 hours a day.

Thanks. It wouldn’t be so bothersome if folks in my department didn’t regularly accomplish this feat. In fact, quite a few of our faculty actively encourage you to take exams absolutely as quickly as possible. As in, no later than the end of the summer.

Clearly you have not heard of the susansinclair method: refuse to write the exam proposal, so that there's no way of scheduling the exams. Let the library books rack up big time fines. Delay still more. Most effective.

Mah. What matters is when you finish your dissertation and what/how much/where you publish. You're doing fine on both those fronts.
