Dissertation Mascot

This stuffed sting ray was a gift from Mister Husband when I passed my orals. It’s been living on my desk ever since, partly because I wasn’t sure where else to put it, and partly because obviously it should be where it and the hillstream loaches (also known as sting ray loaches) can see each other.

I’ve been hammering away at the diss proposal while it lounges around and watches, and it’s become sort of obvious that it’s the dissertation mascot. I would have thought something more sinister would take up that position, but I can work with a sting ray.

(This is totally Billie’s fault, of course.)

Update: “Sting rays wound anyone who tried to catch them and inject a powerful poison. They love music, the dance and witty remarks.” — Aldrovandi, Monstrorum historia, 1642.

HAHAHAHAHAHA I had totally forgotten about "peace bear." He's actually on my desk, but I don't think of him much . . . (I'm not a good caregiver to peace bears, I suppose). I'll pay more attention to him. I do like your idea, though. A mascot. We all need one. :-)

Oh, and I linked this post over at Dissertation Bootcamp . . . let's see all kinds of mascots. You are still welcome to join if you like. ;-)

I love it! It's so cute. Mister H. gives you the most clever gifts.

That is fantastic!

Perfect!

I must confess; I bought myself presents throughout the process. Get the proposal accepted; get a present. Finish a chapter and submit it for review; get a present.

Well, at least it helped me.

I meant to do that starting with finishing exams, but then I started procrastinating on getting the present. Sad, I know. But I’m promising myself that I’ll actually go get it after I get the proposal defended.
